What’s A Pondless Waterfall?
A pondless waterfall is, quite simply, a waterfall without a pond. Pondless waterfalls are self-contained systems that recirculate water through an underground reservoir.
Pondless waterfalls are a great addition to any backyard because they are easy to install and require very little maintenance. Plus, they offer all the beauty of a traditional waterfall without the hassle of keeping a pond clean!

Now that we’ve answered the question “what’s a pondless waterfall?”, let’s look at how these amazing features work.
There are four main steps in the installation process: excavation, liner installation, pump placement, and rockwork. We’ll go into detail on each of these steps below.
Excavation
The first step in any pondless waterfall installation is excavation. This is where you will dig the hole for your underground reservoir. The hole size will depend on the size of the waterfall you are hoping to create. You can use the dirt from your excavation to build the berm for the stream/ waterfall.
Liner Installation
Once the hole has been excavated, it’s time to install the liner. This is a crucial step in the process, so follow directions carefully. The liner will need to be placed in the hole and secured with landscape fabric. Then Aquabloxs, which are water storage blocks, are used to create the underground reservoir along with a pump vault. You can use one large piece of liner or use 2 separate pieces of liner for the basin and the stream. Make sure that you overlap your stream liner at least 6″ over the basin liner to ensure no leaks.
Pump Placement
The pump is what circulates water through the system and creates the waterfall effect. Placing the pump vault inside the aquablox allows you to build your rockwork around the vault in order to hide it more easily.
Rockwork
The final step is to add the rocks that make up your waterfall. This is where you can get creative and design the perfect backyard oasis! Be sure to use rocks that fit the scale of your waterfall. Using too big or too small rocks will make it look unnatural and out of place.
